Social Media Audiences are Enormous and Exhibit Immense Potential for Growth. Are You Tapping into this Highly Engaged Market Segment?
Among other things, the first two decades of the 21st century will be largely remembered for the explosive growth of social media channels. Today’s most influential social media sites—Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Instagram—have millions of monthly active users who spend millions of hours each day on their favorite social media sites.
As of March 2015, Facebook has 936 million daily active users on average, as well as 798 million mobile daily active users on average. Twitter now boasts 302 million monthly active users, and 500 million tweets are sent each day. LinkedIn now has 364 million registered members, while Instagram has 300 million monthly active users.
Meanwhile, the rise of video-sharing platforms, like YouTube, has shifted consumers’ focus from television to their computers and mobile devices. YouTube now has more than 1 billion users, and every day, users watch hundreds of millions of hours on YouTube and generate billions of views.
It’s clear from these and other statistics that social media audiences are enormous, and despite their size, still exhibit immense potential for growth. According to Social Media Examiner’s latest study, 2015 Social Media Marketing Industry Report, marketers are increasingly turning to social media marketing to increase exposure and traffic for their brands, develop loyal fans, and generate leads, among other objectives.
An Overwhelming Majority of Marketers Participate in Social Media Marketing, Though Less than Half are Able to Measure their Social Media ROI.
For its latest study, Social Media Examiner surveyed over 3700 marketers with the goal of understanding how business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) marketers use social media to grow and promote their businesses. Not surprisingly, the overwhelming majority of respondents (96%) stated that they participate in social media marketing. Moreover, 92% of respondents stated that social media was important to their businesses.
As for measuring social media ROI, less than half (42%) stated that they were able to measure their social media ROI. [See Figure 1] This represents a slight improvement from last year, when 37% indicated they were able to measure their social media ROI.
“How do I measure the return on my social media marketing?” ranks among the top five social media questions marketers want answered this year. In fact, 88% of respondents want to learn how to effectively measure the ROI for their social media marketing initiatives.
In order to effectively measure social media ROI, marketers need to set their social media goals, as social media ROI can be measured through a variety of ways, such as customer acquisition, lead generation, clicks, etc. The marketers’ social media goals and resulting strategies must align with their chosen social media platforms. Just as importantly, marketers must track their campaigns using multi-platform social media analytics tools.
Social Media Marketing Offers Marketers and their Businesses Numerous Benefits.
Social media audiences aren’t just immense as they’re also highly engaged. According to Social Media Examiner’s latest study, social media marketing offers marketers and their businesses numerous benefits—namely increased exposure and traffic, more loyal fans, greater marketplace insight, and more leads.
As shown in Figure 2, the top benefit derived from social media marketing is increased exposure (90%), followed by increased traffic (77%). Indeed, social media marketing can amplify a business’s online and offline visibility and can drive targeted traffic to business websites.
The third benefit commonly derived from social media marketing is the development of loyal fans (69%). Marketers develop rapport with their social media audiences by posting interesting and relevant content—such as videos, podcasts, and images—to their chosen social media platforms. Marketers may also post links to blog posts, articles, infographics, and other content that would interest their audiences.
Aside from helping businesses develop loyal fans, social media marketing is also an earned media powerhouse. Interested fans will comment on content and share it with others within their networks, making social media marketing a great means of earning business referrals and creating a buzz.
The fourth most commonly derived benefit is improved marketplace insight (68%). Of marketers with at least one year of experience, 63% or more stated that social media platforms provided marketplace insight. An increase in marketplace insight was also tied to number of hours per week invested in social media marketing. At least 71% of marketers who spend at least six hours per week on their social media marketing were more likely to gain marketplace insight.
The fifth most commonly derived benefit from social media marketing is lead generation. By investing as little as six hours per week, 66% of marketers see lead generation benefits from social media. In fact, more than half of marketers with at least one year of social media experience are generating leads from social media platforms.
