The great thing with surveys is they tell you a lot. Sometimes they validate your hunch – or in some cases prove it wrong. As for SEO agencies and our SEO resellers who are currently focusing on on-site SEO services and G+ authorship, here’s some validation.
A recent survey conducted by a local SEO tools provider showed that today’s most sought after service is on-site SEO. Next in the list is Google+ optimization, the search giant’s own social network. Also making it in the list are: web development, link building, PPC, content creation and optimization, and social media marketing. The BrightLocal Local SEO Industry Survey 2013 asked 1,409 respondents (including agencies and freelance professionals) to better understand the state of the local SEO industry.
When Demand Meets Supply
What's interesting here is that SEO service providers actually are right on the ball. That's because they are offering the services that are mostly needed. When asked what types of services they have on the menu, most respondents named “on-site SEO” and “Google+ optimization” as their top two – the same exact services they consider to be most in demand. In figures, 91% of SEOs said they offer on-site optimization while 86% said they conduct Google+ optimization for clients.
What does this mean for you? It simply means that the demand for on-site SEO and Google+ optimization is there. Clients are out there looking for professionals who can provide these services. If you haven’t tried offering these types of campaigns to your clients, well it’s about time. Which Service Brings In Leads for Clients?
We see from the survey that channels generate the most leads for clients. Majority of respondents – 82% of them – ranked “general search” as the top lead generator for their clients. Good ol’ fashion SEO stays at the top. Local search, which is fast rising in popularity, is at No. 2 with 62% while PPC places third with 26%.
Where is social media in all of this? While it only made it as the No. 4 lead/customer generator, some 82% of SEOs still believe that social media is an effective marketing channel for local businesses. That’s a rise from only 76% in 2011. Some 57% also agreed it works well for certain types of businesses, while 25% described social media as “very powerful”.
The perception of social media as being “over-hyped” softened from 24% in 2011 to 18% this year. Facebook and friends, therefore, are still relevant as sources of leads and customers for local businesses.
What About the Future?
Now, there’s a good reason why tweaking your current practices to reflect the results of this survey. Apart from the most in demand services, there’s another section of the BrightLocal survey that’s very enlightening, and reassuring too. When asked about the future of their business, most SEO professionals had a positive outlook.
If staff growth is any indication, SEO businesses and professionals are indeed bullish on business this year. Some 82% of respondents said they will recruit more people in 2013. But it gets even more interesting.
An overwhelming 93% of respondents said “Yes, definitely” when asked if they expect their business to grow this year. The percentage is a huge jump from the 82% recorded in 2011. It seems the SEO industry’s confidence level is at a high. Asked which phrase best describes their 2013 expectations, most respondents chose “It’s going to be a great year for me.” Only 4% of them chose “I think it’s going to be a difficult year.”
So what’s your outlook for the year? I wanna bet that you’re going to say, “It’s going to be a great year for me.”
